Supreme Court of Pennsylvania
Continuing Legal Education Board Changes Rules
to Assist Lawyers Returning from Military Duty

HARRISBURG, June 2, 2006 - The Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Board today announced a regulation change to assist lawyers returning from military service with CLE requirements.

A number of persons licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania have been called to active duty in the armed forces, making compliance with CLE requirements difficult or impossible. The board recognizes the commitments made by these individuals and has implemented the following regulation to support and assist these professionals:

Upon written request, the CLE requirement will be waived for any compliance period in which members of the Armed Forces serve on active duty outside of Pennsylvania. Within 30 days after termination of active duty, the lawyer must notify the board - and will be required to comply with CLE requirements for the forthcoming year. CLE requirements for the period of active duty will be waived in their entirety.

"It is our hope to facilitate the return to active practice for those courageous men and women who have given so much for the welfare of our country," said Thomas M. Golden, Esq., board chair.

As a service-oriented regulatory agency, the board seeks to help lawyers meet the CLE requirement through modern and efficient technologies and compliance-assurance features.

Additional information on the Rules and Regulations for CLE in Pennsylvania - including online compliance-assurance features - are available at www.pacle.org.
