The Finance Department is responsible for managing budgets, accounting and the accounting system for the Unified Judicial System. It serves as the primary resource for the UJS regarding financial matters. Each year, the Finance Department prepares a detailed budget proposal for the court system that is presented to the General Assembly for inclusion in the total annual spending program for state government. The UJS budget includes appropriations for the AOPC, all state-funded courts, most Supreme Court advisory procedural rules committees, juror cost reimbursements, and certain county court reimbursements.
The Finance Department participates in the annual financial audit of the UJS, serves as a central clearinghouse for financial transactions involving the judiciary; oversees the finances of the First Judicial District/AOPC Procurement Unit; develops information on cost trends and comparative analyses, and responds to questions on judicial finances from the legislature, the executive branch, the media and the public.
