The Committee for Proposed Standard Jury Instructions was first appointed by the Supreme Court in 1968. It assists the administration of justice in court proceedings by developing pattern jury instructions for use by both the bench and the bar. Membership is divided into two subcommittees, one for civil rules and one for criminal rules. The goal of each subcommittee is to ensure that a proper statement of law is conveyed to jurors in language that is understandable. The committees aim to update the instructions every 18 to 24 months.

The Pennsylvania Bar Institute provides administrative and publishing support to the committee. Copies of the instructions are available at their Web site at www.pbi.org.
